With the right care, you’re able to prolong the life-cycle of your workout clothes and make them more sustainable. Below, you’ll find some do’s and don’ts to maintain the fabric quality and bright colors of your favourite sportswear.
Wash on cold
Always wash your activewear in cold water (max. 30°C) on a gentle cycle as hot water and too much friction can damage the fibers of your activewear.
Wash inside out
Turn your workout clothes inside out before putting them in the washing machine. It keeps the colors brighter and helps avoid snags during the cycle.
Use a gentle detergent
Choose a washing detergent that’s gentle on your apparel. Some detergents are abrasive and can damage the activewear to the point that it doesn’t perform the way it’s supposed to.
If possible, opt for a sportswear-specific detergent that’s designed to clean moisture-wicking synthetic materials like the Miele Special Detergent Sport.
White distilled vinegar
Having a stinky workout clothing problem? Soak your activewear in four parts cold water mixed with one part white distilled vinegar to get rid of the bacteria that have made your clothes their home. You can also add a cup of vinegar to your washer’s rinse cycle to achieve the same effect.
Fabric softener
Avoid fabric softeners as they coat fibers with a thin film, therefore locking in bacteria and odor. Fabric softeners also break down the elastic fibers, and you don’t want your leggings to loose their stretch!
Tumble dry
Try to always let your activewear air-dry, as high-heat machine drying can negatively affect the shape and quality. The heat and friction of tumble drying can also degrade the elastic properties and weaken the material, which can ultimately lead to holes and rips.
Wrong detergent
Choose a washing detergent that's gentle on your apparel. Some detergents are abrasive and can damage the activewear to the point that it doesn’t perform the way it’s supposed to.
Too much detergent
Although you might be tempted to use more laundry detergent to clean your activewear, make sure to stick to the specified amount of laundry detergent. Too much detergent will build up in the clothing fibers, which creates a perfect environment for the bacteria and fungi that cause odors.
Too high temperature
Not only is there a risk of shrinkage, bright colors will fade away more quickly when washing at higher temperatures.
